The introduction of Speakers

Prof. Jean-Philippe Steyer

Dr. Jean-Philippe Steyer is a Research Director at INRAE and former Director of the Laboratoire de Biotechnologie de l’Environnement (LBE). With a strong background in process control and automation, his research focuses on the modeling, control, and optimization of anaerobic digestion and biological wastewater treatment processes. He has contributed significantly to the understanding of anaerobic biodegradability, process monitoring, and pretreatment methods for enhancing biogas production from various substrates, including lignocellulosic biomass and microalgae. His work also encompasses life-cycle assessment of bioenergy systems. Dr. Steyer co-developed benchmark simulation models widely used in wastewater treatment research.

Prof. Gabriel Capson-Tojo

Dr. Gabriel Capson-Tojo is a research scientist at INRAE in France, affiliated with the Laboratoire de Biotechnologie de l'Environnement (LBE) in Narbonne. Dr. Capson-Tojo holds a PhD from INRAE-LBE in a CIFRE partnership with Suez, complemented by an Erasmus Mundus International Master’s in Environmental Technology and Engineering and a background in chemical engineering. His research focuses on the biovalorization of gases and resource recovery using phototrophic bacteria, with specific expertise in purple non-sulfur bacteria, bioprocess modeling, and nutrient recycling. He leads and contributes to several innovative projects. An active contributor to his field, he has co-authored numerous high-impact publications in journals such as Biotechnology AdvancesWater Research, and Science of the Total Environment, establishing him as a key figure in sustainable biotechnologies for waste and gas valorization.
