报告简介:Satisfying the growing global demand for food while mitigating climate change and minimizing environmental degradation is one of the most pressing challenges of the 21st century. Water scarcity is emerging as a key constraint on both climate adaptation and mitigation efforts, particularly in food and energy production. This talk will explore the fundamental role of water in sustaining food production and enabling climate mitigation, emphasizing the trade-offs between agricultural intensification, water availability, and energy systems. I will present my research on agricultural water management for sustainable water and food security, which quantifies global agricultural water scarcity, evaluates irrigation sustainability, and identifies pathways to expand irrigation without depleting environmental flows or groundwater. I will also discuss strategies for achieving net-zero emissions in agriculture, including decarbonizing irrigation through net-zero emissions pumping, utilizing waste biomass for nutrient recovery and carbon sequestration, and assessing trade-offs in bioenergy production. A key focus will be on revolutionizing ammonia fertilizers production through decentralized, renewable-powered synthesis, a technological shift with the potential to enhance agricultural resilience and significantly reduce emissions from fertilizer use. By integrating hydrology, engineering, and sustainable resource management, this research provides a framework for optimizing water use while advancing food security, agricultural sustainability, and climate mitigation in an increasingly resource-constrained world.

 

报告人简介:Lorenzo Rosa is a Principal Investigator at Carnegie Institution for Science in the Biosphere Sciences and Engineering Division. Lorenzo is also an Assistant Professor (by courtesy) in the Doerr School of Sustainability at Stanford University. Prior to joining Carnegie, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Institute of Energy and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich. He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science from University of California Berkeley, and a B.S. and M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, Italy. Dr. Rosa’s contributions to science and society have been recognized through multiple awards, including the 2019 American Geophysical Union (AGU) Hydrology Research Grant and the 2021 AGU Science for Solutions Award. The latter award is given “for significant contributions in the application and use of the Earth and space sciences to solve societal problems". In Dr. Rosa’s case recognized his contributions to understanding global water-energy-food linkages and solutions to benefit humanity and nature. The AGU is the primary professional society in Dr. Rosa’s field, and these awards are extremely selective and highly prestigious. In addition to these awards, he was also listed among the most influential young leaders in Science and Technology for the year 2020 by Forbes 30 Under 30.
