Presentation TitleComparison of Subsurface PFOS and PFOA Sorption with Implications for Global Per- and Poly-Fluoroalkyl Substance Distributions

SpeakerDr. Kenneth C. Carroll

Presentation SummaryPerfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are two of the most common per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), and their occurrence is a significant risk driver for these emerging contaminants of concern. Although there are many of these “forever” chemicals and they seem to be globally ubiquitous, we have been developing our understanding about their environmental fate and transport including retention processes and exchanges between phases in soils and groundwater systems. This talk will include an overview of PFAS, highlight some recent research, and illustrate some global trends.

Speaker BioKenneth C. (or KC) Carroll is a Professor of Environmental and Water Science at New Mexico State University (NMSU). He obtained a Ph.D. in Hydrology & Water Resources at the University of Arizona with a focus in contaminant transport and groundwater remediation, and he has a Master’s in Environmental Geochemistry from Ohio University. His research spans physical flow and aquatic chemistry including both experimental and modeling aspects relating to fate, transport, and treatment of contaminants in water and soil. Before NMSU, his prior industry experience focused on some of the world’s largest metal mines, and he spent a few years as a research scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. He is VP and Past President of NMSU’s Chapter of Sigma Xi (honor society), and he was last year’s Soils & Environmental Quality Division Chair for Soil Science Society of America. He previously chaired the American Geophysical Union Hydrology Section Groundwater Technical Committee (2015) and was Herb Ward Family Endowed Interdisciplinary Chair in Environmental and Water Science (2019-2023). He also serves as associate editor for Journal of Hydrology, Soil Science Society of America Journal, Journal of Contaminant Hydrology, and Vadose Zone Journal.
